Matthew's Pizza Restaurant Review:
Years before pizza became a nationwide sensation, Baltimore had Matthew’s. Founded in 1943 in blue-collar Highlandtown, it was where generations of Baltimoreans tasted their first pizza, and it has remained a favorite ever since. The opening of the Creative Alliance across the street brought the pizzeria a younger group of devotees, willing to wait in line to sit in the old-fashioned dining room, painted with murals of the Italian countryside. The pizza itself is somewhat controversial --- the fluffy, high-rimmed crust sags under heavy toppings, and isn’t the best bet for carryout --- but for many, this is simply what pizza ought to be. Fans can even buy the pies frozen so that they can have a Matthew’s pizza on hand when cravings strike. Huge salads, spaghetti with homemade sausage or shrimp, bountiful subs and homemade sorbets round out the menu.
