Max Lager's Wood-Fired Grill & Brewery Restaurant Review:
Tucked into a historic downtown Atlanta building, Max Lager's offers an atmosphere enhanced by exposed brick walls and mechanical elements, a contrast to the towering structures that surround it. Cooking by chef Joshua Lee takes the establishment, which opened in 1998 and claims status as Georgia's oldest brewpub, to respectable dining heights. The excellent brews are from the hand of John Roberts, Jr. Owners Alan and Cindy LeBlanc, and their brewmaster partner Roberts Jr., have outlasted many other downtown dining ventures. Lunch focuses on a raft of salads, burgers and wood-fired pizzas, some of which also are available at dinner. Steaks, chops and fish fare run the dinner program, and although the place is very meat-centric, there is a vegetarian pasta. Made in house, the fried cheesecake has to be the signature dessert. The beer sampler guides you through what's currently in the tanks. Get the house-made ginger beer for the kids, who have access to their own menu.
