Melrose Diner Restaurant Review:

South Philly's Melrose Diner is all sleek and aluminum outside and warmth and Formica within, with sassy waitresses who banter with regulars and dispense advice along with the surprisingly good coffee. Travel back in time by relying on the comfort of chopped meat, as in chopped steak with mushroom gravy (otherwise known as a CB-5), or the solace of chicken --- chicken Parmesan, that is. Twice-baked potatoes stuffed with cheddar, American and Parmesan cheeses are a side dish, as is creamed spinach, and sometimes, fried eggplant. For dessert, there are retro puddings, custards, cakes and pies in flavors such as creamy coconut custard and blueberry. One caveat --- if your party is less than five, you may have to share a vinyl-covered booth --- a feature that is one of the Melrose’s many charms.
