Mexico City Restaurant Review:

Sure, the Mexican cuisine at Mexico City is good and even reasonably authentic, but people come as much for the atmosphere and potent (if, sadly, less than perfect) margaritas as for the food. The brightly colored place, accented with eclectic Day of the Dead pieces and a trio of piñatas, jumps every night with a young and boisterous local crowd. We like the fresh corn chips that arrive with tomatillo and ranchero sauces, and a splash of either perks up the hand-made guacamole. Salads include one made with cactus leaves and a traditional Caesar. Ceviche coctel (marinated raw seafood) and nachos Mexico City---corn chips with hunks of grilled chicken breast, strips of poblano, melted cheese and guacamole---are other appetizer options. You can choose among enchiladas, tostados and tacos with standard fillings and accompanying rice and beans. But regulars go for the other side of the menu, for dishes like cochinita or pollo pibil, complexly-spiced Yucatan-style preparations of pork and chicken, or pollo en menta, an unusual preparation where a hearty dose of fresh mint adds a surprising spiciness. And if you’re seeking authenticity, by all means skip the Cuervo Gold and ask for some real tequila in your margarita.
