Mildred's Big City Food Restaurant Review:
Everything on the menu is made using local organic produce as much as possible, fresh farm products, and Florida seafood. Mildred's (the name is an homage to hard-working movie mama Mildred Pierce) has a modestly priced lunch menu filled with innovative salads, cold plates and hot sandwiches. But at dinner, the big city food moniker really applies. Chef Bert Gill has a repertoire that includes grilled octopus with Carolina barbecue and Bellevue watermelon, ginger-cured salmon on couscous with tangerine oil, and grilled lamb loin on eggplant gratin. The in-house bakery turns out artistic sculptures that double as cakes, plus pies and pastries; try the flourless chocolate tart and chocolate-caramel-pecan torte. The casual-elegant atmosphere and friendly, low-key service keeps the spotlight on the food.
