North Square Restaurant Review:
From the outside, it’s hard to get a sense if the subterranean eatery on the corner of Waverly Place and MacDougal Street (and attached to Washington Square Hotel) is a casual eatery or an elegant restaurant. But step inside and you’ll find it’s a little of both. Yoel Cruz’s nouvelle American menu has South American accents but with an emphasis on local ingredients: vegetable empanaditas made of tomato salsa, lentil sauce, feta cheese and avocado cream, and barbecue braised short ribs with collard greens sautéed with smoked bacon, sour cream, horseradish mashed potatoes and chipotle barbecue sauce. We recommend the Long Island duck breast with egg noodles, julienned vegetables, red shiso, currant and kumquat sauce. Consider the coriander-crusted sea scallops with quinoa pilaf and sautéed market greens. End the meal with passion fruit and coconut mousse cake or citrus crème brûlée with lemon poppy seed shortbread. The affordable wine list hops around the globe with bottles from Languedoc to Long Island, Portugal to Piedmont.
