Penang Restaurant Review:

Malaysian cooking seems to include the best of Indian, Chinese and Thai influences. This Chinatown spot, near the Convention Center, is part of a New York chain, and sets off its cuisine in boldly designed surroundings with curved metal and sleek stone surfaces and high-top tables with wok-like bases. Start with one of the rotis, creamy curried chicken and vegetables served with pancakes for dipping and scooping. There are noodle dishes and crunchy calamari; even an omelet with baby oysters is a must-try. Vegetable options abound --- try the spicy kang kung belacan, a dish made with water spinach and plenty of chilies. Friendly staff will modulate the seasonings for picky palates and advise you wherever they can. Beer and a number of sweet fruit drinks, which are enjoyable with multi-seasoned fare, are available. The food comes out in a hurry, which can leave you feeling rushed. Better to course your own dinner, or you'll be out the door in 30 minutes. And bring cash.
