Red Cow Restaurant Review:
Red Cow offers a lighthearted take on serious meats. Bright walls, an open kitchen and stray sunbeams streaming through high windows are not signs of a traditional steakhouse. Instead, this is a vibrant, welcoming space for a restaurant genre normally dominated by heft and darkness. The menu, however, stays true to its carnivorous roots, covering a $35 price spread with six different steak frites options. Choosing the eight-ounce hanger cut over the two-pound bone-in rib-eye leaves more room to try the house-made charcuterie ranging from lamb terrine to smoked beef tongue. For a more casual meal, the burger keeps meat as a priority. That said, it wouldn't be out of place to also consider a platter of raw oysters. A bounty of vegetables supports the fresh-forward focus with roasted mushrooms, grilled summer squash and haricots verts. Dessert is best in liquid form with sweet wines (brandies, ports and Sauternes). But a few profiteroles, bursting at the seams with coffee ice cream, are always welcome. The wine selection stands up well to the food, supporting steak frites with a list of French and Northwest wines priced to pair with the fare. Service is über-friendly.
