Satsuma Cafe Restaurant Review:
This bustling Bywater neighborhood restaurant offers a menu that leans toward organic and healthful options, although there’s something for everyone. Well under $10 gets you a hearty breakfast of anything from a “green eggs and ham sandwich” to a tofu and black bean scramble. Lunchtime is crowded and fast-moving --- you might encounter a roasted pear and Brie melt on sourdough, and a BLT that adds goat cheese and avocado. This is also a good place for juices; try the ABC with apple, carrot and beet with lemon. Dessert is house-made cakes, such as red velvet. The restaurant is packed on Sundays during breakfast and brunch hours, with sidewalk tables added to handle the crowds. Be prepared for a “nothing fancy” ambience comprised of a mish mash of tables and chairs, leftover newspapers and alternative publications strewn about, and regulars who often spend hours drinking coffee at their tables. No alcohol is served, but for three bucks you can get a wheatgrass shot. Also located Uptown, 7901 Maple St., 504-309-5557.
