Shakas Hawaiian Flavors Restaurant Review:
Portions are large and prices are reasonable in this modern space just off Alhambra’s main drag. Draft beer from Hawaii’s Kona brewery and fruity soju drinks are available from the bar. Shakas' local plates are like a flight directly to the islands, piled with hearty fare like loco moco (hamburger topped with two eggs sunny side up and gravy), Spam and eggs, and lau lau (pork and butterfish, wrapped and steamed in taro leaves). The kitchen turns out plates of Korean short ribs, teriyaki chicken and steak, all with the traditional sides of macaroni salad, rice and steamed cabbage. Giant combo plates have something to please everyone, including sesame chicken wings and barbecue pork. Bacon-fried rice is speckled with Portuguese sausage and fish cakes, and saimin noodles are topped with barbecued pork or fried eggs. If you just want to graze over drinks, try the Menehune popcorn chicken or pork tacos. For dessert, shave ice can be found alongside cheesecake and chocolate Bundt cake.
