South Street Souvlaki Restaurant Review:
If you can get past all the enticing scents and attractively displayed dishes at the front counter, you will find a very pleasant dining room at the rear of one of the longest running and most popular Greek restaurants in town. We suggest the gyros, but if you're ready to venture off that path, start with some rich taramasalata (red roe whipped with olive oil and lemon) or saganaki opa (brandy-flamed kasseri cheese), and then try lamb souvlaki with roasted potatoes and fresh greens on the side, or the pastitsio, a sort of Greek lasagna with béchamel. Finish your feast with any one of the ultra-sweet, phyllo-based pastries such as baklava. If you're coming from a distance, call ahead to ensure the restaurant isn’t closed for one of two annual vacations, starting New Year's Eve and the Sunday after July 4.
