Stella 34 Trattoria Restaurant Review:
A one-time storage room on the sixth floor of Macy’s has been transformed into an elegant (though casual) Italian restaurant. The Empire State Building can be admired from the large windows in the space. The kitchen turns out Italian staples that please the shopping-weary diner. The wood-fired oven creates pizzas reminiscent of those in Naples, constructed with ingredients like San Marzano tomatoes, Caputo flour and fior de latte mozzarella. The cauliflower, black peppers and Meyer lemon pie in particular is a standout, as is the Vongole with white clams, crème fraîche, roasted garlic and preserved lemon. Buckwheat pasta with whole roasted suckling pig ragù, golden raisins and ricotta salata makes a flavor-packed carb fix. Wood oven grilled halibut is hard to pass up, especially with a fragrant fennel vinaigrette and roasted root veggies. Among the few desserts available, we suggest the rice gelato. The all-Italian wine list has some affordable options, including by the glass.
