Tosca Restaurant Review:
This Mediterranean restaurant has all the elements of a big-city success story, but it unfolds instead just off Hingham Harbor. Named after an Italian opera, Tosca inhabits a dramatic airy space, a bit edgy with pipes and soaring with open beams and exposed brick. Yet its very size allows you to enjoy anonymous intimacy with your dining companion --- even as you enjoy Brian Hennebury's seasonal cuisine. The menu includes staples like pan-seared scallops with heirloom tomato risotto and chicken “under a brick” served with oyster mushrooms. There are also unique takes on classics, as in meatballs made with rich short ribs and ricotta cavatelli, or wild boar Bolognese with zucchini ribbons. Wood-fired flatbreads take the form of fennel sausage, fig and prosciutto and classic margherita with fresh basil. Standout entrées include wood-oven-baked cod and balsamic pork tenderloin. Steak seekers can enjoy a Prime dry-aged, 16-ounce boneless rib-eye. The wine list, dividing most of its attention between California and Italy, is not exactly a bargain lover's dream. For dessert, we suggest the warm mini apple fritter donuts with cider spiced caramel.
