Union St. Restaurant Review:
Just a few blocks from Wayne State University, this popular Art Deco-style eatery offers a creative menu as well as Detroit’s largest Bloody Mary Bar. Ready to explore your culinary horizons? Try the dragon's eggs: blue cheese-stuffed chicken breast coated with tempura batter, tossed in Jamaican "hellfire" sauce and served atop Caesar salad. The not-so-adventurous diner can also choose from ribs, chicken salad, burgers and pasta. Scooby-Doo pasta, egg pasta with chicken and vegetables in Alfredo sauce, is a kids’ favorite. For brunch, we suggest the house-smoked brisket poutine comprising yam fries, beef brisket, cheese curds, poached egg, red wine demi-glace and micro greens. The bar stocks more than 100 bottled beers, some of which are seasonal. Choose from 30-plus wines by the glass or opt for a bottle; consider the single-malt scotches, small-batch bourbons and Cognacs, too. Spanish coffees are a signature quaff. Lively on weekends, Union St. attracts students and those looking for the college charm of oilcloth tablecloths, bad acoustics, an uneven wooden floor, rickety chairs and good times.
