Middle 8th Restaurant Review:
This stylish, mid-priced Yunnan restaurant pulls in the fashionable young Chinese set. Its popularity has driven the service a little manic, but it never fails to be friendly. If the sofa chairs don’t do it for you, the intense lighting and clean white lines give an impression of calm even when the restaurant is bustling. We recommend the leaf-grilled fish and all of the mushroom dishes, such as the fried mushrooms in black pepper sauce. The Dianchi beef comes served on what looks like the blade of a farmer’s hoe. There’s also deep-fried cactus, fried potato cakes and fried goat’s cheese as side dishes. Desserts consist mainly of sweet sticky rice; try the rice bean cream with coffee, a bowl of dark red beans in a mush of condensed milk and coffee flavoring. The papaya salad comes with pop rocks. To wash it all down, there is a good range of local rice wines, some of which are quite sweet.
