Mon's Thai Bistro & Sushi Bar Restaurant Review:
Yes, we are irked by the indiscriminate use of “bistro” and miffed at non-Japanese joints that feel obliged to offer sushi. But we won’t quibble in the least with the addition of a cocktail lounge that serves up drinks as inventive as anything coming from the kitchen; try your Martinez with pan-seared dumplings (though complain if the dipping sauce lacks adequate ginger). The sushi is somewhat standard-issue, but do consider the robust rice soup with (again) fresh ginger and garlic. A seat on the patio is perfect for exploring the green papaya salad or steamed green mussels and herbs, but Thai squid with chili paste may require the air conditioning of the cozy interior. We are more partial to simple dishes such as the poorman noodles with egg, roasted garlic and peanuts than the angel shrimp served with honey-wasabi sauce. On the flip side, the grilled and marinated Korat beef commands our attention, especially when coupled with a bottle of wine from a wine list that’s way better than at most Asian restaurants.
