Orchids of Siam Restaurant Review:
Dinner is a better bet than lunch at this established Thai/sushi spot; the midday crew can coast regarding both service and food. The menu is a round-up of all the usual suspects, with a few unusual inventions that are most enjoyable, particularly the habit-forming curry puffs (pastry dough stuffed with a mix of diced chicken, potatoes and onion, sautéed with curry); served with cucumber dip, you can't eat just one. Among entrées, our pick is volcano fish, a Thai-spiced deep-fried snapper that comes to the table flambéed and topped with sweet chili sauce that's only minimally hot, fine even for kids who aren't seafood-phobic. Japanese food is less flamboyant, but sushi seems competently prepared, especially cooked specialty makis incorporating the place's particularly light tempura batter, like the caliente roll (snapper tempura, avocado, asparagus, cucumber, spicy mayo---kind of a Japanese fish sandwich). A fun spot for a date or family meal.
