The Original Q Shack Restaurant Review:
The Original Q Shack not only smokes its pork shoulders over hickory for hours in the classic western North Carolina style, it also makes mesquite-smoked brisket equal to that of the best Texas barbecue joints. You can travel from one side of the South to the other in one combination plate. There’s also smoked chicken, beef sausage and St. Louis cut pork ribs, along with authentic Southern sides: collard greens, not-too-sweet coleslaw, stewed green beans and mac ‘n’ cheese. Hushpuppies, crunchy with a hint of onion, are a classic side with NC barbecue. The corn chip chili pie, a nod to the past, is made with brisket chili and topped with cheese, sour cream, avocado and jalapeños. Enjoy your feast with a bottle of Cheerwine (developed in North Carolina in 1917) or a glass of local beer. The small dessert menu varies daily. If you’re lucky, red velvet cake will be on it. Picnic tables outside offer the perfect good-weather spot to savor a Q platter or sandwich.
