Outerlands Restaurant Review:
Outerlands --- so named because it’s on the outer edge of the Sunset District --- is a tiny, wood-timbered café with a sustainable, seasonal menu focused on rustic foods that warm and comfort. It’s an ideal escape from the immediate environment: the beach with its saltwater and wind chill is only two blocks away. Young, hip crowds line up, willing to wait for simple and satisfying sustenance, especially at brunch. The star of most meals is the bread; thick sliced and chewy, it can be slathered with jam or piled with cheese. Brunch is characterized by savory open-face sandwiches, Dutch pancakes drenched in syrup and substantial salads. For lunch, try a grilled cheese and a bowlful of hot soup. Dinner highlights straightforward, seasonal fare. Lamb arrives piled on farro and drizzled with savory jus. A side of sweet braised carrots completes the meal. But wait --- the maple pot de crème beckons, a sweet, rich bite to enjoy before you disappear into the Sunset’s fog.
