Oven and Shaker Restaurant Review:
Most of the seating in the narrow storefront is at counters or at the bar, where the wood-fired oven provides a focal point. Dark furnishings and discrete lighting lend panache and a backdrop for a loud, social buzz. It's not the most relaxing place to dine, but the food compensates. Pizza makes up a significant portion of the menu: ultra-crisp crusts with creative toppings ranging from truffles, octopus, cauliflower, pork belly, asparagus, fennel-sausage and pork shoulder and pineapple. Order a nosh from the bar snack menu --- mussel and oyster fritters, fried chickpeas --- and pair it with a craft cocktail, glass of wine or lavender soda. Or match these beverages to a full meal, such as a pocket bread sandwich with fried chicken, peppers, tomato butter and basil. The Nostrana salad, a Caesar variation with radicchio substituted for romaine, is an homage to presiding chef Cathy Whims’ other restaurant. For dessert, don't miss the classic brownie sundae.
