Phoenix Chinese Cafe Restaurant Review:
There’s nothing enticing about the décor in this strip-center Chinese, once the darling of some of the city’s better-known chefs. But there’s something for every palate on the menu (we strongly recommend looking at all menus, especially the traditional one that offers the likes of congee with pork and preserved egg), on the changing chalkboard, and in the selection of dim sum (shrimp cakes with bell pepper and brown sauce look better than they taste, however). Multi-course Peking duck is available without advance notice, and there’s a roasted, crispy duck as well, but salt-toasted squid and cuttlefish with ginger and scallion, if available, are of almost equal interest. Those without developed Asian palates might avoid the salted fish hot pot for its pungency and special mashed tofu for its blandness, but a touch of easy exoticism is available with the whole, fried or steamed flounder.
