Frontier Restaurant Restaurant Review:
Every college town has one --- a cheerfully shabby diner near campus that generations of students have called home. In Albuquerque, that diner is the Frontier. Nob Hill’s yellow-roofed landmark has been plying young Lobos --- and most other locals --- with its famous green chile, homemade tortillas and buttery sweet rolls since 1971. The walls are cluttered with Southwestern art (including countless portraits of John Wayne), the air is filled with chatter, and the tables are packed with devotees of the burritos, burgers and hash browns, washed down with fruit smoothies that pass for dessert --- and almost compensate for the absence of alcohol. (Same goes for the fancy-schmancy Coca-Cola Freestyle machine.) Forget service --- counter orders and coffee refills are the extent of it --- but count on character to spare, from the crack of dawn until the wee hours (Frontier only goes dark from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.).
