The Port Grill & Rawbar Restaurant Review:
It's hard to find a reasonably priced meal in downtown Newport, especially in the summer. And as for affordable waterfront dining, well, it’s not likely. Except that's exactly what you'll find at The Port. The restaurant is behind the Wyndham Inn on the Harbor, with access from Thames Street via the narrow Anne St. Pier. It faces a ferry dock and marina, so the views aren't spectacular, but it's still waterfront. Try the above-average clam chowder (moderately thick broth, plenty of clams, not too many potatoes) to start. Daily specials may include one of our favorites, a jerked beef sandwich that is complemented nicely with a Red Stripe beer. Other menu temptations included lobster mac ‘n’ cheese, a turf ‘n’ surf combo (sirloin tips and grilled shrimp), and a raw bar menu with littlenecks, regional oysters, shrimp and lobster tails. A Monday to Friday "appy hour" has the Mount Gay Rum drinks flowing easy alongside half-priced appetizers and raw bar specials. To go with the Caribbean theme, finish with a slice of Key lime pie or rum raisin cake. In warmer months, brunch is served on weekends.
