Porter House New York Restaurant Review:
Porter House New York offers views of Central Park from its fourth floor perch in Time Warner Center. Designed by Jeffrey Beers, the restaurant’s look features masculine tones in caramels and browns that contrast with the white tablecloths in the dining room. Instead of offering avant-garde riffs on steakhouse standards, chef Michael Lomonaco delivers the classics straight up. It’s the breadth of the menu --- you’ll find beef, lamb, chicken, duck and a selection of fish and pasta --- that separates Porter House from its competitors. Jumbo lump crab cakes with horseradish-mustard cream make a promising start, as does steak tartare, prepared to order with hand-cut filet mignon. The Prime porterhouse steak for two --- nicely charred and perfectly seasoned --- is the best follow-up. Lighter appetites will find solace in delicate pan-roasted sea scallops on a bed of creamy celery root. Sides, like rich baked mac ‘n’ cheese and unctuous creamed spinach, are overly generous but hard to resist. New York cheesecake with wild blueberry compote or rich flourless chocolate cake adds the final cozy touch. The wine lists boasts more than 500 bottles and focuses on American, French and Italian red wines.
