Soi 4 Bangkok Eatery Restaurant Review:
Think you know Thai? Get ready to have your world rocked with this modern twist. Sure, you can get pad thai here, but it’s not the typical American-style sweet stuff, bringing instead a toss of fresh rice stick noodles stir-fried with prawns, tofu, egg, bean sprouts and a sprinkle of nuts and chives. Then there is duck, pan-seared with tender baby spinach and dressed in a fiery red curry brightened with pineapple, or catfish in an aromatic stir-fry of green beans, yellow squash, ginger and creamy curry. Each dish is carefully put together in meticulous, fine-dining plating, and rather than family-style platters, comes as a small sampling for building a multi-course meal. The owners, the Sirimongkolvit clan, also are the chefs, and they’re skilled with sauces---your server will explain how the many small dips that arrive with each order are best used to enhance every mouthful. Cocktails aren’t overlooked, either, in rainbow flavors such as a Thaimosa of Pinot Noir Brut, mango nectar and peach schnapps. Dessert is more interesting than most Asian restaurants offer, like the deep-fried mango topped in vanilla ice cream; it’s crispy outside, moist, warm and sweet inside, and like Soi 4 itself, altogether a bit different.
