THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Tia Maria Restaurant Restaurant Review:
Tucked into a humble storefront, this family-run Peruvian place looks as foreign and exotic as the cuisine it sells. Of course, Peruvian cooking is enjoying something of a frontrunner situation in the DC area, with eateries slowly making headway through the onslaught of Tex-Mex and Salvadoran destinations. How can you not love a restaurant whose appetizers include a bowl of gratis roasted corn kernels---the jumbo size---that are both crunchy and salty? Start off with the scrumptious version of papa à la huancaina, or potatoes with eggs and a cream sauce, and follow along with the causa rellena, a filling mixture of mashed potatoes wrapped around a tuna fish mixture, then deep-fried. Entrées include grilled fish with a peppery sauce and fried rice with chicken. Meals come accompanied with assorted beverages but the Inca Kola, which slightly resembles grape juice but with a flavor wallop, is a must. Desserts are few but be sure to order the purple corn pudding.
