Tonga Hut Restaurant Review:
Located on the second story of a nondescript building in the Uptown Design District is the popular Tonga Hut, decked out in tiki chic style with dark wooded walls, South Pacific artwork and an ultra-cool kitschy clamshell and lava rock fountain. The Polynesian-inspired menu features dishes like purple yam mash, a less bland version of the Hawaiian dish poi, and plenty of skewered-meat pupu platters delivered on carved wooden dishes. Crab Rangoon is tasty, while the bacon-wrapped liver, known as rumaki, is more of an acquired taste. We suggest the huli huli chicken hen and slow-roasted kalua pork, as well as the lighter cabbage salad with chicken. As for libations, who needs something shaken and stirred when your drink comes complete with a floating micro umbrella? From the classic mai tai and Blue Hawaiian to a tangy Manhattan and super-size Scorpion Bowl, the Tonga Hut knows how to pour it on.
