The Haight Street location of this Middle Eastern-Mediterranean spot is a popular stop off for a leisurely lunch outside on a sunny afternoon or a quick bite before a night of bar hopping. The succulent shwarmas and filling falafels are homemade, fresh, and snuggly wrapped up in giant squares of lavash. The no-nonsense décor includes a few dingy tables inside the sunny room and a handful of tables lining the sidewalk---perfect for people watching. The not-to-be-missed shwarma is chicken on Tuesdays and Fridays and lamb the rest of the week. The meat cooks slowly on a vertical rotisserie with drippings falling onto the tomato wedges and thinly sliced onions being warmed below. All this, plus tahini, parsley, and hot sauce are swaddled in lavash and grilled for a few moments before being wrapped to go. Vegetarians might enjoy the falafel, made of puréed garbanzo beans, parsley, and spices which are fried to order and paired with any number of garnishes. A falafel deluxe includes succulent strips of eggplant and fried potatoes. Platters of baba ghanouj and hummus make for excellent side dishes. The fresh carrot juice is excellent, as is the minty yogurt drink.
