THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Locanda del Lago Restaurant Review:
Milan native West Hooker-Poletti has masterfully kept Locanda del Lago going for more than 20 years. Nestled amid the hustle and bustle of the Third Street Promenade, this neighborhood restaurant serves specialties from the Lake District of northern Italy. The sidewalk patio continues around the corner, while inside guests find a curved counter facing the action in the kitchen, an elevated dining area and a bar and lounge with its own distinct atmosphere. Daniele Turchetti has taken over as executive chef since the departure of Gianfranco Minuz. The menu incorporates ingredients from both near (cantaloupe and cabbage from Santa Monica Farmers Market vendor Weiser Family Farms, for example) and far (imported dried "missoltino" lake anchovy). Choose from a variety of house-made pastas and classic main courses such as osso buco made with all-natural Niman Ranch veal shank, saffron-Parmesan risotto and gremolata. End your meal with fresh gelato. Meal deals include a lunchtime $14 antipasti buffet and two-course menu for $16 or $19, as well as dinner prix-fixe menus. The serious wine list expectedly shows a big Italian influence. If you have occasion to linger, consider sharing the grolla, a traditional communal after-dinner beverage from northern Italy. Served in a hand-carved wooden bowl, it's an espresso drink infused with brandy, grappa and Sambuca, served flambé. There's also a savory Caprese martini. Nearby sister outlet Caffe Bella is a casual spot for panini, pizza, gelato and more.
