Wirtshaus Restaurant Review:
Wirtshaus, with German owners, is a charming German version of the gastropub, with authentic cuisine updated for an L.A. palate served in a cozy room with a prominent beer and wine bar. Rustic wooden tables spill onto a covered patio buffered from busy La Brea Avenue. The sausage plates are solid, including a traditional bratwurst-like sausage with crisp casing and a refined mustard sauce. Side dishes include a tasty (albeit non-German-style) potato salad, sauerkraut or refreshing cucumber salad. Also offered are duck sausages, and pork or veal schnitzel in wild mushroom sauce. For dessert, there’s apple strudel with crème anglaise. About 35 German and Austrian beers are available (16 on tap), and you can also score a German Riesling or Sylvaner. Dogs --- no pun intended --- are welcome on the patio, and you can work off the calories at a ping pong table in the back.
