Located on the ground floor of the “Physical Graffiti” building on St. Marks Place in the East Village, Xe May Sandwich Shop takes an inventive approach to Vietnamese cuisine. Vietnamese tacos, anyone? For this hybrid dish, the kitchen takes the ingredients that one would find in a banh mi sandwich --- meat, pâté, carrots, peppers and cilantro --- and encases them in a tortilla. The results make you realize there’s a reason why no one has combined the two elements before. For something more traditional, Xe May makes a good banh mi, as well as sandwiches that deviate from the norm, all of which are good, especially the lamb curry version. For those choosing to take the healthy route, the fish sauce-laden shrimp and papaya salad will hit the spot.
