THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Zak’s Place Restaurant Review:
There aren’t all that many dining options in downtown Hinsdale, so that may just play a hand in the popularity of this place, which sports a clubby setting with wood walls, large windows overlooking the street and deep burgundy curtains. Our favorite part of the meal, we’ll admit, is the smoky, grilled romaine salad topped with spicy chipotle ranch dressing and pico de gallo. Of course, the seared foie gras is a more decadent alternative, its strawberry-rhubarb a foil that cuts through the richness. Entrées, while never too out there, are certainly indulgent. Tender chocolate braised short ribs with white truffle orzo delights, while creamy mac ‘n’ cheese goes glam with the addition of lobster. The food is decent, even if it largely is predictable, but unfriendly service is disappointing and leaves us wondering if a return visit makes sense. There’s a nice bar menu and a respectable wine program with a number of by-the-glass options, so perhaps that’s the way to go.
