THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Zax Restaurant Review:
Restaurateur Chris Schaefer continues his successful run here at Zax. An inviting, comforting place---though a tad cramped---it remains one of those beloved neighborhood eateries that also draws diners from all over L.A. Schaefer likes to keep things simple and rustic, which is what the seasonally-changing menu delivers---and then some. Highlights include great salads, ricotta gnocchi with truffled leek cream, slow-roasted halibut with crispy pancetta and a five-onion sauce and duck with a berry-kumquat reduction. Save room for sweets: chocolate-banana bread pudding, pumpkin cheesecake with bourbon crème anglaise and the refreshing crème de menthe ice cream sandwich. In the dining room, the exposed bricks set the pace for a warm experience. We like the wine list, still very well priced with colorful offerings.
