Zocalo Mexican Grill & Tequileria Restaurant Review:
This cantina serves up Mexican fare in a festive, brightly decorated space in East Fourth’s party-ready neighborhood. A patio adorned with dozens of strands of twinkling lights attracts thirsty guests, who casually enjoy huge margaritas while perusing the menu. Tequila is a top priority here; accordingly, the list features more than 70 different brands of the elixir. The food is hit or miss, but the combination platters are usually a safe bet (we like the chile relleno and taco). The guacamole is a good snack to go with your cocktail; adding to the allure, it is prepared tableside, so you decide how much cilantro, jalapeño, onions and tomatoes to include. Desserts consist of typical Mexican sweets, like fried ice cream and fruit empanadas. At night, the eatery morphs from mild-mannered restaurant into high-octane nightlife destination; it might not be suited to some, but it certainly draws the crowds.
