A MASCULINE BLEND
Krupp Brothers
2006 The Doctor
California
As the winery's name implies, Krupp is the collaboration of two brothers, Bart and Dr. Jan Krupp. The winery farms sustainably on their estate, located in the mountains on the eastern side of the Napa Valley's floor. Together with winemaker Nigel Kinsman and consulting winemaker Aaron Pott, (who also works with Quintessa), the Krupps produce a variety of red wines from varietals including Cabernet, Syrah, Tempranillo, Merlot and Malbec. They also make a limited quantity of whites from Marsanne, Viognier and Chardonnay. The 2006 The Doctor is a complex red made from a creative blend of 37% Tempranillo, 28% Merlot, 21% Malbec and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon. On the nose, it offers earthy, masculine notes of leather and cigar along with cloves and black plums. On the palate, the wine's fruit flavors shine with plum, blueberry and black cherry mingled with an array of exotic spices. On the finish, there's a pleasing note of black raspberry, cocoa and a hint of spicy clove. The wine's bright acidity should cut the fat of rich red meats. Serve The Doctor with traditional steak and potatoes, a hearty beef stew or herb-crusted leg of lamb.
