Our Selection for Wine of the Week November 21, 2011
Weinstock Cellar Select 2010 Alicante Bouschet Mendocino County, CA
Weinstock is part of Herzog Wine Cellars, a California wine company known
as a worldwide leader in kosher wine. The company also believes in sustainable
winegrowing, as well as developing the varietals best suited to a climate — even when that
varietal is a lesser-known grape like Alicante Bouschet. The winery's 2010 Alicante
Bouschet was grown in cool-climate Mendocino County. Classic deep purple in color,
the wine offers pretty strawberry, blackberry and pomegranate on the nose, mingled with
a hint of sage and a savory, gamey element. In the mouth, its tannic structure is balanced
by bright, tart cranberry and pomegranate acidity. More rich, nutty flavors evolve toward
the back of the palate. A wine with both savory and sweet notes, it would make an
interesting and affordable choice for serving with Thanksgiving dinner (and one that will
surely surprise your guests!). It would also make a nice choice to pair with classic winter
comfort foods like pot roast or London Broil with Yorkshire pudding.
