Part of a large locally based chain, The 99 as it’s known in these parts is a well-run operation. It’s also very popular so prime time can mean a wait, but it’s rarely long, as the chain’s hallmark of efficiency ensures a quick turnover. The food is straight out of the standard-issue pub grub, you-could-be-anywhere manual, but it’s amazingly cheap and some dishes like steak tips and fish and chips are better than you’d think. Staffed by friendly people, there’s a large kid’s menu, which means that in Fresh Pond you get folks from North Cambridge and the nearby ’burbs. There’s a small bar scene and they do a brisk lunch business.
