The All Spice team doubles down in San Francisco with inspired dishes that showcase Sachin Chopra’s mastery of delicate spices.
THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED All Spice Restaurant Review:
The third act from husband/wife team Sachin Chopra and Shoshana Wolff doubles down on the success of their San Mateo flagship (following a brief attempt at a wild game concept) in the space that formerly housed Masa’s. Chopra’s aesthetic flair and mastery of delicate spices hit the mark with ornate, complex dishes that unfurl new flavor and texture combinations with each successive bite. A serpent cucumber verbena soup is cooled with Buddha’s hand yogurt sherbet, but kicked up with Aleppo pepper. Smoked uni risotto is served in the shell alongside whole roasted fresh catch. Squab with duck confit is paired with cherries, creamy corn custard, tarred fig preserves and king oyster mushrooms. The popular aab-e-gosht (wild boar) is garnished with edible silver foil and petit licorice. We particularly enjoyed “an octopus’s garden,” which artfully combines plums, beets, chives, eggplant caviar, Key lime and potato on a bed of squid ink. A short, creative dessert menu includes a refreshing cucumber-wrapped tres leches cake and a Russian honeycake that smacks of avocado buttercream. A lineup of craft cocktails is supported by seven beers and a simple, accommodating list of wines by the glass; make time to savor a cocktail at the restaurant’s visually arresting bar.
