This below-ground brick-walled joint is a popular hangout for the Upper West Side's acting and literati crowd, who show up nightly for serious conversations at the bar followed by hearty, inexpensive meals. The extensive menu features everything from pasta and fish specials to terrific burgers and fries, as well as some of the best fried chicken in the city. Adding to the All State's charms are a hip jukebox and a roaring fire in winter. On weekends, a reasonably priced brunch hits the spot.
