Alva?s allure is generated by the dim exposed bulbs and black-and-white photos that pay homage to Thomas Alva Edison. The bar is always hopping with a neighborhood crowd (women included) smoking cigars from the list posted on the wall, and the smallish bistro beyond the bar serves contemporary American cuisine that?s always a pleasure. Among the offerings are grilled steak, roasted cod and a Cuban sandwich that can compete with that at any rice ?n? beans joint we can think of. Alva is also friendly, and even romantic in an everyday kind of way---especially when you?re squeezed into a corner with a loved one.
