Chef Will Gilson's Puritan & Company pays homage both to the previous inhabitant of the building it now occupies, the Puritan Cake Company, and Gilson's roots: the former Garden at the Cellar toque lays claim to being a 13th generation Mayflower descendant. Quirky design elements include an antique gas stove that serves as the hostess stand. Grab a seat at the communal table and try the house-made vermouth in a dirty martini or order a microbrew. A special Peak Organic beer is made exclusively for Puritan with honey from Gilson's family's farm. Grilled oysters, radishes and butter, a charcuterie plate and a smoked bluefish pâté are among small snacks, while heartier appetizers range from grilled sausage to lamb belly and bone marrow gratin. For dinner, the free-range chicken with charred onion sauce or the wood-roasted Muscovy duck may rewrite your definition of comfort food. Finish with the Meyer lemon curd or classic tapioca pudding, rarely seen on today's menus.
