THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Sojourner Cafe Restaurant Review:
The California health kick was still fresh, if not new, when the Sojourner opened in 1978, and it created quite a stir in a town best known for steaks and enchiladas. A young crowd packed the room, ordering vegetable lasagna and huge bowls of brown rice with veggies and nuts topped with melted jack cheese. The restaurant now offers a choice of portion size on almost every menu item, but other than that, things haven't changed much. The place is still popular with the old generation, as well as a new one, both enjoying hearty soups, spicy black-bean stew, crispy tofu and onions and other favorites. Predictably, salads are popular. But there’s also savory oven-roasted turkey, curry chicken and burgers, not to mention outrageous house-baked desserts. While service tends to be, shall we say, relaxed, it’s a nice place to linger, with local art on display and good people-watching --- particularly for out-of-state visitors curious to see Santa Barbarans in their natural habitat.
