THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Azami Sushi Cafe Restaurant Review:
Squeezed in among teen boutiques and a strip mall on hip Melrose, shoebox-size Àzami is a rarity: a sushi joint owned and operated entirely by women. Yes, it shocks at first to pass through the swinging glass door and be greeted by a pair of female sushi chefs, but the surprise befits the trend-setting neighborhood. Although the menu is designed for serious sushi buffs, all the more understandable considering that the owners' parents are seafood purveyors, all the basic Japanese-American favorites are also on offer, like teriyaki chicken and vegetable tempura. More interesting are daily specials like young bamboo soup, a delicate yet comforting blend of baby bamboo, seaweed and just a hint of spice. Sushi and sashimi cover all the basics from fresh uni to the ubiquitous California roll. Well-priced combos present various sushi samplings along with miso soup and a ginger-dressed green salad.
