THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Bennett's Bad-to-the-Bone BBQ Restaurant Review:
Los Angelenos Tony Bennett (who has culinary experience) and Lisa Bennett took over a landmark Atlanta 'cue joint (Bennie's) and made it their own, with art on the walls and hardwood floors. Their somewhat California take on barbecue sets the fundamentals of Southern cooking on a slightly different course from what tradition would dictate. The collard greens cooked with smoked turkey leg, peppers and onions work very well. So does the Brunswick stew. But the meat on the pork sandwich, while nicely smoked and moist, lacks the taste of seasoning, and the sauce is a too-thick and way too-sweet affair that will set any Southerner's teeth on edge. It works better on the smoked lamb shank (Fridays only), probably thanks to the lamb's gaminess. They also offer tri-tip, in case any displaced Californian has a hankering for this west coast specialty.
