THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Blue Coral Seafood & Spirits Restaurant Review:
The brainchild of Paul Fleming and Bill Allen (founders of Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar), the restaurant was created to bring consistently high-quality ingredients to people passionate about seafood. The San Diego branch is ideally located in the busy Aventine Center of UTC. The ambience is fun; despite the serious focus of the menu, the décor is lighthearted and comfortable. The yellowtail crudo is a visual treat: paper-thin, sushi-grade tuna drizzled with blood orange vinaigrette and a smattering of minced Serrano chilies. The buttermilk-battered calamari is also a good choice---especially when dipped in lemon-caper aïoli. We agree with the kitchen that the Tristan Island lobster tails are sweet and tender; who needs melted butter when you are eating what some regard as the finest lobsters on Earth? We also recommend the pan-seared sea scallops with a Meyer lemon glaze and the arctic char with citrus-curry sauce. Landlubbers fear not, the menu includes meaty choices such as a New York strip steak, filet mignon and Kurobuta pork shank. Side dishes are large enough to share; we like the Yukon mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus, but suggest skipping the overpowering beet salad and blue cheese coleslaw.
