Cal Pep Restaurant Review:
A rustic and lively ambience is created with terracotta tiles, bare-brick walls and a long narrow bar where chatty locals and tourists line up to indulge in quality sharing dishes that celebrate the region’s freshest fish, shellfish and seasonal produce. There is no menu, but the friendly and often frenetic staff will gladly talk you through the numerous options. Stock up on tapas essentials such as pimientos de padrón (salted green peppers), jamón Ibérico and patatas tortilla, before moving on to the seafood delights of xipirons (sautéed baby squid with garlic and parsley) and Merluza Envuelta (hake wrapped in grilled chard leaves). Pair with some of the finest wines from across Catalonia and the rest of Spain, and if you’re lucky enough to be served by ever charming Cal Pep himself, be sure to ask for his personal recommendations. Finish with a selection of Spanish cheeses and the essential crèma Catalana, which is a local take on the flamed crème brûlée classic, and a glass or two of the Cordon Negro Brut cava from the nearby Freixenet winery.
