THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Chengdu Taste 2 Restaurant Review:
Sichuan food is on fire in the San Gabriel Valley, and Chengdu Taste is the leading practitioner of this regional Chinese cuisine, which is famous for tongue-numbing peppercorns. Kelly Xiao and Lynn Liu teamed with chef Tony Xu on an Alhambra original, and Xu then expanded to nearby Rosemead. The space features grey walls, blue banquettes, frosted panels decorated with roses and petals, and pop music on the radio. The signature mung bean noodles are partially submerged in chile sauce and sprinkled with crunchy toasted mung beans. Wonton with green chile features rosy pork shrouded in thin dumpling skins, with a shower of scallions and ma la. Boiled sliced fish in hot sauce arrives in a massive bowl with a rich broth hosting tender slices of fish, a liberal shower of dried chiles, minced garlic and scallion. Toothpick lamb is nearly as flavorful as the dish is fun to eat, with cumin-coated lamb chunks tossed with chile oil, dried chiles and cilantro. If you’re looking for something unique, order the off-menu shrimp and potato dish with butterflied shrimp, ground pork, caramelized potato sticks and a parade of chiles. There isn’t much that can cool your palate at this point, but a mountain of steamed white rice and sweet tart plum tea certainly help.
