This location of the Claim Jumper restaurants, in The Lakes shopping center, next to the Civic Arts Plaza, is so upscale it has almost no resemblance to the chain's humble beginnings. There are no chunky wooden tables, pick-axes or gold nuggets anywhere to be seen. Instead, we enjoy the Craftsman-style architectural details like walls laid with stone and large fireplaces. The bar area is still referred to as a saloon, but you're more likely to see people sipping martinis and mojitos than sarsaparilla drinks or even beer. And those people will be wearing Prada jeans, not coveralls. The menu has evolved as well. Big eaters can still enjoy huge portions of ribs, steaks and rotisserie chicken at both lunch and dinner. And the six-layer “motherlode” chocolate cake is still on offer for dessert. But there are also a dozen salads, an oven-roasted tomato flatbread, fish tacos, cedar-planked salmon and an albacore tuna sandwich on fresh-baked tomato herb bread. This is actually a good spot to take a date. Who would have known?
