THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Cypress on the Hill Restaurant Review:
Opened just before the crash of 2008 when luxury was still fashionable, Cypress presents a décor that would look perfectly at home in Beverly Hills. This sleek, beautifully designed space suggests a special dining experience---and you won’t be disappointed. Chef/owner Alex Gallis’s background cooking at some of Charleston’s finest restaurants, among them Magnolia's and Fish, left him with a passion for seafood, reflected on Cypress’s menu. Flash-fried whole fish, be it sea bass, red snapper or flounder, depending on the season, is a signature dish. Start with the pan-seared foie gras, crispy rice-crusted calamari on lemon grass-infused slaw, or the pan-sautéed Gulf rock shrimp. Meat lovers will enjoy Gallis’s lamb shank braised with white runner beans and minted carrots or his locally raised pork tenderloin with succotash and stewed greens. Desserts have included tarts, house-made ice creams and sorbets; we’ve enjoyed the inspired caramel sorbet. The wine list is well-chosen, particularly in the realm of hard-to-find bubblies, making Cypress the place to go for a tasteful celebration.
