A hidden gem of Tel Aviv, David Ve Yossef is a low-profile, intimate culinary playground offering modern Israeli cuisine. Chef duo David and Yossef personally purchase every ingredient, prepare each dish and execute every meal. The dynamic menu is a blend of prominently French, Mediterranean and Italian dishes presented in small portions, à la Spanish-style tapas. Grilled sumac calamari with lentil paste and cool yogurt exemplifies the chefs’ creativity and regard for each component. The orange and mascarpone risotto is made to a just-right consistency, flavored by sweet and bitter orange zest that is balanced by the acidity of red and yellow tomato skin and the soft texture of mascarpone. Grilled entrecôte skewer is cooked to medium rare, served simply with chili-spiced onion skin, baked dates and mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, the wine selection is minimal, yet there are a couple of decent Israeli wines. Desserts are worth a try, especially the mallabi made with mascarpone and topped with candied pistachios and rose-scented plums.
